Do This Right Now
Water gushing?
Shut off the main water valve. It's usually where the water line enters the building, or near the meter. Turn a wheel handle clockwise until it stops. Turn a lever handle a quarter turn so it sits crosswise to the pipe.
Standing water in your home?
Shut off the main valve first. Then switch off power to any wet area if you can do it safely from a dry spot. If the water is near outlets or the electrical panel, stay out and call us.
Water heater leaking or failing?
Gas heater: turn the gas control to OFF. Electric heater: switch off its breaker. Then close the cold-water valve on top of the tank.
Sewer backing up?
Stop using sinks, toilets, showers and washing machines. Don't run water. Keep people and pets out of the wet area. Skip the chemical drain cleaners. They can make the job harder and less safe.
Smell gas?
