Tankless vs. Tank: How They Compare
| Tankless | Tank | |
|---|---|---|
| Hot water | Heats on demand, so it doesn't run out of stored water | Stores a set amount, so it can run out |
| Space | Compact, wall-mounted | Takes floor space |
| Energy use | Often more efficient, with no standby loss | Keeps water hot all day |
| Upfront cost | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Install | Can need a larger gas line, new venting and other changes | Usually a straightforward swap |
| Lifespan | Often longer when maintained | Shorter on average |
| Maintenance | Needs periodic descaling in hard water areas | Needs periodic flushing and an anode check |
Is Tankless Worth It in Southern California?
Often, yes. Sometimes, no. Here's the honest version:
- It usually makes sense for larger households, several bathrooms, or anyone tired of running out of hot water.
- Savings vary. Southern California's mild climate means the incoming water is warmer, so the heater does less work. Your savings depend on how much hot water you use.
- Hard water matters. Orange County water is hard in many areas, and scale can shorten a tankless heater's life without maintenance.
- A tank can be the better call for a small household, a tight budget or a home where a tankless install would need a lot of work.
What a Tankless Install Involves
Swapping a tank for a tankless heater isn't always a one-for-one swap. We check:
- Gas supply. Tankless heaters often need a larger gas line than a tank does. See gas line repair.
- Venting. Tankless units vent differently.
- Water and electrical connections. New shutoffs, a condensate drain and power for the unit.
- Permits and inspection. We'll tell you what your city requires.
In Anaheim, we replaced a 40-gallon tank with a tankless heater, and the install needed some modifications. We explain what changes and why before we start.

Tank Water Heaters, Too
We install tank water heaters when they're the right answer. In Anaheim, we installed two 50-gallon power vent water heaters, chosen for energy efficiency, to feed a house with 7 bathrooms. And we've installed a 100-gallon water heater on an emergency Sunday-afternoon call for an Anaheim restaurant. If you're weighing tank vs. tankless, we'll do the math with you.
Brands We Install
We work with Rinnai tankless heaters and with A.O. Smith and Bradford White tank heaters.
How Much Does a Tankless Water Heater Cost?
The price depends on the unit, the gas line, the venting and the permit. You'll have an upfront price before we start, and we'll explain every line of it. Tankless heaters also last longer with regular care, especially where water is hard.
Commercial Water Heaters and Boilers
Restaurants, hotels and apartment buildings can't go without hot water. We install commercial water heaters and repair boilers and circulation pumps, and we replaced a boiler circulation pump on a hotel's hot water system. We work around your hours and send photo documentation and a clear invoice.
